Leadership & Culture
Principal Luke Abdullah has led Grayling since day one, hand-selecting his team and shaping a school culture built on pride, respect, and open communication. He personally conducts all parent tours and greets students at the gate each day, reflecting the school’s hands-on and approachable ethos.
Luke’s leadership focuses on long-term care: “In ten years, we want the school to still look brand new.” With a high standard of upkeep and cleanliness, the school feels well-loved and well-managed.
Learning Environment
Grayling features:
- Straight classes (not composite)
- Class caps of 21–28 students
- Quiet breakout spaces in some rooms
- Triple-glazed glass to reduce noise transfer
Each classroom has its own space (not open-plan), and learning is supported by breakout zones for calm time or sensory needs.
Specialist & Enrichment Programs
Students at all year levels participate in:
- STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts, Maths): 1 hour/week
- Art: 1 hour/week
- PE: 1 hour/week
- Performing Arts or Spanish: alternating by semester
- Optional private music lessons also available
Grayling uses the Multilit synthetic phonics program, ahead of the Victorian Government’s 2025 curriculum changes. Extracurricular clubs (e.g. Pokémon, choir, gardening) vary each term and are teacher-led.
Culture & Community
- Strong house system builds camaraderie across year levels
- Bullying is addressed through restorative practices and followed up closely
- Zero-tolerance approach, with support for both neurodivergent and vulnerable students
- Cultural diversity is celebrated, with many families from Sri Lankan and Indian backgrounds
- Weekly assemblies, events, and open-door communication strengthen the school’s family vibe
The school also runs seasonal events such as Harmony Day, NAIDOC Week, and a Christmas concert, with parents actively encouraged to participate.
Sports & Activities
Physical activity is a priority at Grayling, with:
- Specialist PE each week
- Sports incursions from local professionals (e.g. basketball, rugby, lacrosse)
- After-school sports training and lunch clubs
Although Grayling doesn’t have a full canteen, online lunch orders are available on Thursdays and Fridays.
